Research Programme - ALARI TANZANIA

Research is a fundamental pillar for understanding the complex development challenges faced by communities living in arid and semi-arid areas. In many parts of Tanzania, local populations particularly Pastoralist and Agro-Pastoralist communities experience increasing pressure from Climate change, Environmental degradation, gender inequality, and fragile livelihood systems. These challenges often intersect, creating persistent vulnerability and limiting opportunities for sustainable development. The Arid Lands Resources Initiative (ALARI) recognizes that effective and sustainable solutions must be informed by credible evidence and grounded in the realities of local communities. Research therefore serves as an essential tool for identifying key development issues, understanding their root causes, and generating knowledge that supports practical and community driven interventions.

Working in close collaboration with local communities, national and international research institutions, universities, and development partners, ALARI conducts interdisciplinary research aimed at advancing knowledge and raising awareness of the challenges facing grassroots communities in Tanzania. Through this collaborative approach, the organization seeks to bridge the gap between academic research, policy dialogue, and practical development action.

ALARI’s research efforts primarily focus on three interconnected thematic areas

Climate change and environmental conservation, particularly in relation to land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity protection, and sustainable natural resource management.
Gender inequality, including barriers to women’s participation in decision-making, access to resources, and equitable opportunities within pastoralist and rural communities.
Livelihood challenges, with emphasis on resilience, income diversification, food security, and sustainable economic opportunities for communities in arid and semi-arid landscapes.

Through systematic research and knowledge generation, ALARI aims to support informed decision making by communities and development stakeholders.

The strategic objective of ALARI’s research programme is:

To conduct high-quality research on climate change and environmental conservation, gender inequality, and livelihood challenges in order to generate evidence that informs effective solutions, policies, and community-led actions.

Key Activities under the Research Component

To achieve its strategic objective, ALARI will implement the following core research activities:

Conduct participatory socio-economic research with local communities to understand local development dynamics, resource use patterns, gender relations, and livelihood strategies.
Document, publish and disseminate research results through a variety of platforms to reach different audiences. These may include research reports and policy briefs, academic publications and working papers, community information materials, and online knowledge platforms and media channels
Build and strengthen partnerships with universities, research centers, and independent researchers within Tanzania and internationally.
Organize outreach activities such as community workshops and dialogue forums, local dissemination meetings, and training sessions and participatory learning events
Establish a system for affiliating external researchers and scholars who share the organization’s research interests.
Implementation of practical interventions at both small and larger scales.
